About

Camera
I work with a couple of different cameras and formats. I use a Shen Hao 4x5 and a Hasselblad 500cm. My favorite would have to be large format, I can slow down and take my time, plus the results are beautiful. The camera I use the most would have to be the Hasselblad. I love the 6x6 format and it's smaller size makes it more mobile and more approachable.

Subject
I started out shooting landscapes. I love the great outdoors, camping, and nature's beauty. I have since put a lot of time into portraits. I enjoy the interaction and experience of talking with people in their element and photographing them as they are. I always ask permission before I photograph someone. Even if it's just a slight nod and a consenting gesture. One of the most important elements in a portrait are the eyes. There is a connection between the viewer of photograph and the subject when eye contact is made.

Method
Besides occasional weddings and family portraits, I pretty much only shoot black and white film. I like the drama and slight seperation from reality that is found in black and white. I process all my film by hand and make many prints in my traditional wet darkroom, some prints however are printed digitally.

Inspiration
I find inpiration and motivation from many different sources: Dead trees. The music of John Prine. The sound of a Harley. Michael Kenna. Fog. Campfire smoke. Boats. Silver hair. Michael Kahn. Museums. Orchards. My Frye boots. BBQs. Saturdays. Robb Kendrick. Songs by Martin Sexton...
